Titanium Dioxide In Toothpaste-Is Titanium Dioxide Banned In Uk
As of my last update in early 2023, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), which is commonly used as a white pigment in paints, plastics, papers, and in sunscreen as a UV filter, has not been banned in the UK. However, there has been discussion and regulatory activity regarding its use, particularly in cosmetics.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has classified Titanium Dioxide as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) due to its potential to cause cancer when inhaled as a powder. This classification led to restrictions on its use in certain products, especially those that could be inhaled, such as spray paints.
In the context of cosmetics, the use of Titanium Dioxide in sunscreen has been under scrutiny. In July 2021, the European Commission proposed to classify TiO2 as a carcinogen, which could lead to restrictions on its use in cosmetic products. However, as of my last update, Titanium Dioxide was still allowed in the UK and the EU, subject to certain labeling and packaging requirements.
It’s important to note that regulations can change, and for the most current information, you should refer to the official UK and EU regulatory bodies or the latest guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the UK.
