Titanium Dioxide Safe-Is Titanium Dioxide Banned In Europe In Cosmetics
As of my last update in early 2023, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) is not banned in Europe for use in cosmetics. However, the use of Titanium Dioxide in cosmetic products is regulated by the European Union’s Cosmetic Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
In 2021, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) classified Titanium Dioxide as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) due to its potential to cause cancer when inhaled as a powder. This classification led to discussions and assessments regarding its safety in various applications, including cosmetics.
Cosmetic products containing Titanium Dioxide must comply with certain labeling requirements and restrictions. For instance, if Titanium Dioxide is used in powders or sprayable products, it must be labeled with a warning about the potential cancer risk from inhalation. Additionally, the concentration of Titanium Dioxide in such products may be limited.
It’s important to note that regulations can change, and the status of Titanium Dioxide in cosmetics can be subject to new scientific findings and policy decisions. Therefore, for the most current information, you should refer to the official communications from the European Union or the European Chemicals Agency.
